The Royal Oak, Stoke St Gregory, Taunton, Somerset

Good beer, good food and good company are what The Royal Oak at Stoke St Gregory is all about, so there’s every good reason to go there. This traditional village pub is run by the community and you’ve got to take your hat off to them, they’re doing a jolly good job of it with a range of draught beers, wines and spirits on offer, along with hearty home cooked food from the kitchen.

The menu is pub favourites with their own creative twist, especially evident in the vegetarian dishes like the Aromatic Garden Burger, The Mexican Burger and the 5 Bean Chilli. There’s a Homemade pie of the day, Hand carved ham, egg and chips, Beef burgers and Homemade chilli if you fancy something more meaty. The menu changes with the seasons.

There’s a garden for the sunnier days when the weather’s good enough to sit outside, and indoors at either end of the pub, a wood-burner where you can warm your toes when it’s cold out. They have a fortnightly music night, a monthly quiz night, and if the skittle alley’s not in use by one of the local teams you’re more than welcome to have a go or to book it for a night with friends and family.

The other thing they do here is the village shop, more farm shoppy than convenience store; they sell fresh fruit and veg, meat, fish, dairy produce and store cupboard essentials seven days a week, and there’s also a café where you can stop for coffee and cake. This is the kind of thing that keeps communities thriving; long may it last.
