The George, Wedmore, Somerset

Vintage furnishings, features and distressed walls blend seamlessly with the more modern interiors and lush fabrics  at this relaxed inn which dates back to the 15th century. It’s very popular with the people who live in Wedmore and visitors alike, who come for the ambience and the food, ranging from soup and sandwiches to mouth watering dinners. On the mains: Rabbit & Partridge Pie with Celery, Apple & Onion, Homemade Chips & Green Beans; Roasted Whole Cornish Plaice, Homemade Chips, Green Beans, Lemon & Caper Butter, and Creay Garlic Mushroom, leek, Walnut & Blue Cheese Tart Tatin, Homemade Chips & Salad.
Sit on the sofas in the front room, in the light filled Cherub Room, or in the Mirror Room. There are three outdoor areas, the best is the terrace that overlooks the churchyard, though if you have small children you’ll probably prefer the walled garden where there’s a play area; if you like to watch the world go by then you’ll be happy sitting at the front where you can see the comings and goings in the High Street. In the warmer weather they have barbecues and live music in the garden.
