Swallows Rest - Accommodation
Turn off the A358 and pootle along the high-hedged lanes to Swallows Rest, set in its own private lane in the Somerset countryside. Park up, get out and have a good stretch, then go on in, through the porch to the dining room. Furnishings are a blend of modern and period style, the backdrop is centuries old character – the hefty stone walls, elm beams and window seats. Dress the long dining table with flowers and finery, set the scene for a humdinger of a celebration feast.
Left of the dining room is the kitchen, modern farmhouse style and so well equipped for self-catering and private chefs alike. Room to prep, to cook and serve, room to chat, and even to sing and dance – there’ll be no lonely cooks here!
The other side of the dining room is the sitting room, with big fat leather sofas to curl up on, a wide screen TV, the original inglenook fireplace, and to one end, restored 15th century panelling – an unusual historic feature. Carry on to the games room where there’s plenty of elbow room and a 3-in-1 table that means pool, air hockey or ping-pong.
The bedrooms are all upstairs, off a long landing; down at one end in the Orchard Suite are Bedrooms 1 and 2, both sleeping 2 in zip and link beds (super king or twin), so what a brilliant space this makes for a family, or for good friends sharing. It also has a dressing room and an ensuite bathroom with a free-standing bath and separate shower.
Along the landing, Bedroom 3 (The Garden Room) has a king size French bed and an ensuite bathroom with an overhead shower, and Bedroom 4 (Willow Room) is another one with zip and link beds, and its own shower room.
Just outside the front door there’s a large terrace and a covered dining area – the perfect spot for breakfast in the sunshine, for lunch or dinner. But you have a choice, because across the drive a rose arch leads to another sitting area with outdoor sofas beneath a pergola – lovely for afternoon tea and chitchat. Beyond is the BBQ lodge, all cosy Scandi style with cosy seating, a small kitchen area and central firepit.
Follow the path to the hot tub, indoor swim spa and more outdoor seating; the swim spa has full height bifold doors so you can pull them right back and let the sunshine in. Being outside in the evening at Swallows Rest is very special, with the fresh night air, lots of twinkly lights and the stars above you, shining brightly in a big open sky. At the end of the field, past the swim spa lodge, there’s a play area with swings and a football goal, and a small orchard with plum trees.
