Mallards Pike Lakes, Cinderford, Gloucestershire

These manmade lakes in the Forest of Dean are a magnet for people who like walking, cycling and adventure activities but it’s such a big place that there’s no danger of it being crowded. It’s a good place to pick up one of the trails or rambler routes into the wider forest, or you can opt for a gentle stroll on the easy access trail around the lower lake where benches are placed at regular intervals so you can sit and contemplate or watch the mandarin ducks dabbling on the water. Every day in the summer months and most weekends during the winter there’s a cabin selling hot and cold refreshments, but one of the nicest things is to bring a picnic and find a quiet spot for the afternoon. The lower lake can be booked by groups for boating, led by a qualified instructor – call 01594 833057.
