High Glanau Manor, Lydart, Monmouthshire

A wonderful Arts & Crafts house set in 12 acres of quintessential gardens laid out in the same style, designed by H Avery Tipping in 1922 (he was the Architectural Editor of Country Life, so knew a thing or two about country house gardens). Take your time to stroll around the formal stone terraces, the Edwardian glass house and huge pergola; see herbaceous borders bursting with colour and fragrance, pause by the octagonal lily pond and take in the views reaching towards Sugar Loaf and the Brecon Beacons. Paths meander through woodland gardens amidst azaleas and rhododendrons, and along a stream garden with a lush fernery and primula beds; the orchard is alive with wild flowers and the buzz of bees, the flitting of butterflies. It’s a dream.
High Glanau Manor is part of the National Open Gardens Scheme in Monmouthshire so has limited opening days; it’s best to call for information.
