Hardy’s Cottage, Higher Bockhampton, Dorset

This idyllic little cob and thatch cottage hidden away in the woods at Higher Bockhampton near Dorchester is where Thomas Hardy was born in 1840. The cottage was built by Hardy’s grandfather and has changed little since the family left; it’s where Hardy wrote some of his earlier works, including Under The Greenwood Tree and Far From The Madding Crowd. Besides the attachments to the famous author, Hardy’s Cottage paints a strong picture of rural life in the 19th century
Tickets are timed as the cottage can only accommodate a few people at a time. You buy them from the Visitor Centre where there are loos, shop and a café.
