Chauvigny, Vienne

Chauvigny is surely one of the few towns in the world that can boast 5 castles – that and its architectural heritage that dates back to medieval times is the reason so many people come here each year. It’s a very special place with spectacular views of the Vienne valley; it feels very relaxed so you can quite happily take your time to stroll around the narrow streets in the upper town, perhaps pausing at the magnificent 12th century church. There’s a museum of popular traditions and archaeology, which will appeal to those with a penchant for all things old, and another dedicated to the area’s industrial heritage.
Every year from the middle of March to the middle of November there’s a free-flying bird show at one of the castles; it’s called The Giants of the Sky. Go see.
