Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens, Abbotsbury, Dorset
Rare and exotic plants from all over the world flourish at these lush gardens; mainly due to the unique microclimate that’s created in this sheltered wooded valley close to Chesil Beach. Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens in Dorset is reminiscent of the Victorian plant hunters with impressive palm trees in what was the walled kitchen garden of a country estate, huge gunnera in the valley garden, and some breath taking displays of rhododendrons and hydrangeas. Stroll through the Camelia groves, follow the woodland trails in the arboretum, linger by the tranquil ponds.
If you like what you see head to the plant centre where you can buy plants that are grown in the gardens; if you’re in need of refreshments go to the Colonial Restaurant. There’s a gift shop and the Gardens hold regular events throughout the year, with one of the most popular being the floodlit evenings in October.
Dogs are welcome on leads, and discounts are given to groups of 10 or more visitors. Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens are open every day except the Christmas/New Year period, from 10am-5pm in the summer, and 10am-4pm in the winter.
