Step in through the porch to a commodious hallway and off to the left is the elegant dining room, light and airy with period features and a big window overlooking the front garden. Go through to the kitchen, bright and spacious, and well equipped; what's great is that there's plenty of room and the design is such that you can socialise and cook at the same time. It's of such generous propertions that it's no bother for a professional catering team to come in and cook (see our Extras page), something that Sleeps12 guests often do, particularly if they're celebrating something special.
To the right of the hall is a lovely sitting room with a wood-burner, timeless leather Chesterfields, and a big TV. There's also a big drawing room with plenty of sumptuous seating, a beautiful feature fireplace and another wood-burning stove; Just think of those autumn walks in the hills or on a rugged windswept beach, then returning to the fireside for hot chocolate and toasted tea cakes...
The games room is accessed from the drawing room or from the hall and has a pool table that can be quickly converted for table tennis. A further reception room is the library, beyond the dining room; it has a TV and a good DVD collection, and is a delightful room to while away a rainy afternoon or a chilly evening.
The 9 bedrooms are really rather dreamy, arranged over 6 suites on two floors. They're named after the rectors and their wives, who have lived here over the years; a charming touch of house history. The soothing neutral tones and timeless furniture fits perfectly with the character of The Old Rectory, the rooms all feel so calm and restful.
On the first floor there are 4 suites with a total of 5 bedrooms. The Vernon Suite has two large bedrooms and shares an ample bathroom, so is ideal for families; Mum and Dad in John Vernon, two children in Augusta Vernon, and room for a cot or two.
The Billington and Hellier Suites are both ample in size and have their own ensuite bathrooms. Just wait till you see the bath for the Hellier Suite! Big and sumptuous and right in front of the window with the most wonderful views.
Also on the first floor is the Stannard suite which has an en suite bathroom and overlooks the pretty courtyard at the back of the house.
Up on the second floor are two further suites, each having 2 bedrooms, so again, perfect for families with young children.
Both of these suites, The Elrington and The Alford have big bedrooms and well sized bathrooms.
In the Elrington Suite, the huge bath has a lovely setting, in an almost separate alcove within the bathroom.
Outside are large, part-walled grounds with mature trees and pretty flowerbeds; sit in the front gardens and enjoy the views of the sea, or potter about and play croquet on the lawns. There's certainly plenty of space for the young 'uns to charge about and let off steam, and theere's some chunky play equipment and a trampoline for them to play on. At the back of the house there's a quiet courtyard with plenty of garden furniture, a barbecue, and a nice big hot tub; lie back and look up; blue skies by day, stars coruscating at night - if the weather is good, of course!
