Pull up into the courtyard off the lane and straight ahead of you is Shires, a timber-clad contemporary transformation of an old wagon shed and milking parlour. This place is the bees knees when it comes to access friendly holidays; there’s a lift, removable hoists, a fully accessible bedroom with an en suite wet room, and the flooring throughout the ground floor is completely level, no steps, no lips.
You enter Shires via the games room where there’s a pool table and table football, and then carry on round to the snug where colourful sofas invite you to put your feet up and chill out. Off the snug is a hallway where stairs rise to Bedrooms 1-3 on the first floor, then there's a loo, and Bedroom 4, which is fully accessible and has been so carefully designed it can even have an elevating bed, and a hoist in place for emergency escape. The en suite wet room is fully kitted out with room for care givers to assist with bathing.
Continue through the snug to the big open plan kitchen-diner with huge sliding doors opening onto the patio and views that go on and on for miles. To one end is the fully equipped kitchen; 2 large ovens, 2 combi ovens, a big induction hob, a freezer, 2 fridges, a wine cooler, ice maker and 2 dishwashers - talk about convenience! The chunky dining table seats 14 people comfortably – but check this out; up above you a lighting tube runs around the room and gives you flexibility to change the colour and the mood in an instant! What a setting for those celebratory dinners – birthdays, anniversaries, etc! Get local meat delivered for it, book professional caterers to come in and do the cooking, make a real occasion of it.
On from the dining area is another hallway that leads to Bedroom 5, which is all geared up to work as a caregiver’s room, with a built-in intercom to Bedroom 4. A staircase leads to Bedroom 6 and the hallway continues round to the cinema room which has 512 surround sound, a 65” Smart TV, a games console and DVD player. Just make sure you get plenty of popcorn in! Shires has Sky Q throughout so you can be sure of good internet speeds and you shouldn’t have any problems downloading films or games. Off the cinema room is a utility room with a washer and dryer, and a door that leads out to the spa hall, which has a coded lockable door for safety.
And wow, the spa hall is amazing! There’s a heated infinity pool that’s an even 1.2m deep and has built in LED lighting, a sunken hot tub, a sauna, changing rooms, shower and WC. Again, the accessibility has been very well thought out with a hoist that can be installed to lower patient and caregiver gently into the hot tub, so no one is missing out. Right in front of the hot tub ginormous bi-fold doors pull right back so you can bring the sunshine in and step out onto the decking whenever you want to. The windows that face the yard are amazing - privacy glass means you can see out perfectly but no-one can see in.
Up the first staircase at the end of the landing is Bedroom 1 with an en suite shower room, and next to it are Bedrooms 1 and 2 and a shared bathroom with a roomy shower cubicle and a bath. These bedrooms all have zip and link beds that can be arranged as superkings or twins, and all have French doors that open onto a balcony with glass surround, outdoor furniture and those breathtaking views across the valley. This is all south facing too, so it’s the perfect spot for alfresco lunches and for sunbathing – and it’s totally private, there aren’t even any footpaths across the fields so you won’t see a soul.
The other staircase takes you to Bedroom 6, a bigger room that has zip and link beds with 2 pull out trundle beds (charged extra per person), so it’s perfect for sleeping a family or four friends. The en suite shower room has a very generous double shower.
Outside there’s a large patio right off the kitchen/diner and round to the side is a lift to take wheelchair users and the less able bodied up to the balcony. The rest of the garden is laid to lawn, so plenty of room for fun and games, plus there's play equipment, football goals, and a Scandinavian style BBQ lodge.
