Turn off the winding lanes and follow a private drive for about a mile until you reach Pitsworthy, a traditional Somerset farmhouse tucked away in a secluded valley with the steep wooded hillsides and rufty tufty heaths of Exmoor all around.

Go in through the door to a long flagstoned hallway. You’ll notice the calm and peaceful ambience that pervades at Pitsworthy right away; the house has been renovated to a very high standard with heritage colours, original features and gorgeous interiors that give a timeless country house feel.

Off to the left is a WC and a lobby with a shower room straight ahead, and Bedroom 5 to the right. All rooms overlook the south facing garden so in the morning you’ll awake to birdsong and the sunlight streaming in on brighter days.

The book-lined hallway runs the length of the house; halfway along is the sitting room, full of modern farmhouse character with a window seat, a big inglenook fireplace housing a wood-burner, plenty of room to sit comfy, and a big TV. Light pours in through the big picture window, a door leads out to the garden.

To the right of the sitting room, also accessed from the hall is the kitchen/dining room, Shaker style, with a table and chairs in the middle; sit there at breakfast time tucking into your bacon and eggs, watching squirrels and pheasants root about on the lawn.

At the end of the hall a wide staircase leads to a long landing; off to the right, down at the end is Bedroom 1, with an en suite shower room. A little further along is Bedroom 2, which has a bathroom with a bath and separate shower. To the left of the landing is Bedroom 3 – another one with an en suite bathroom with a bath and shower, and then there’s Bedroom 4 which has twin beds and its own shower room.

Just across the yard is the games room; back in the day this was stabling and you can still see much of the original character in the thick stone walls, enormous rustic roof trusses and the stone drinking troughs. Think of the fun and laughter – there’s a pool table and table tennis, and up the stairs on the mezzanine, table football, a sofa and a TV in the gaming zone. A door leads to Bedroom 6, where there's a double bed and a single, so snooze space for 3. This makes excellent sleeping quarters for a family, or for 4 older children, with use of the shower room on the ground floor.

The gardens are to the front and side of the house; in the pretty front garden, beyond a mossy stone wall and across the lawn, the Allcombe water runs along; it really is bliss to sit out there in the sunshine with the sound of the breeze in the trees and the stream burbling happily along.

To the side of the house is the wood fired hot tub and a covered outdoor kitchen, all fuelled by wood from the estate; perfect your pizzas, get the steaks sizzling, have a good soak. Feed the chickens, collect eggs for breakfast, pop into the glass house to pick tomatoes for tea. Wander through the wildflower meadow, cross the bridge over the stream and climb up through the woods.

Right next to the garden there’s a fenced field for dogs to play, just along the track there's a lake and two ponds where you can fish for trout. The lake will keep you amused for hours, with bridges across to the islands and a small rowing boat to play in – it’s all rather Swallows and Amazons! Take a rod and go and catch trout for supper; if you’re a novice there’s fly fishing tuition (see Extras).

You can also try your hand at clay pigeon shooting on site with a professional instructor, so there really is plenty to keep you smiling at Pitsworthy. It’s a wonderful place to come and celebrate that special birthday or anniversary, for multi-generational families, gatherings of friends, refined hen weekends and corporate team building or hospitality. There’s even a professional caterer on site who can come and cook whatever you want – breakfasts, lunches, afternoon tea, three course dinners and even picnics to take on an excursion to the moors.
