Halse Water House is chocolate box stuff: a charming old house in an idyllic setting; you won't forget it. In through the gate, a gravelled driveway leads to a turning circle and off road parking for several cars. You'll see then how lovely the garden is, plenty of room to run around and a brook babbles through it (toddlers and younger children should be supervised at all times). A five acre paddock means there's even more space for family games so get out there and play rounders or French cricket, take a rug and have a picnic; halcyon days with the backdrop of beautiful countryside.
At the back of the house is a pretty courtyard with a dining pavillion that's heated so you can eat out there year round. There's a hot tub with room for 8 people, so you can climb in and sit back for a good old natter, and just imagine that; the utter tranquility as one by one the evening stars come out. If bliss could be captured and bottled, this would be it.
Push open the big old wooden door and step into the hallway; off to the left is the kitchen, wonderful, old-fashioned country style with pretty cupboards, and quarry tiles on the floor. But it's so well equipped and it's a good size; cooking for your group shouldn't be any bother and you have the choice of a using a traditional Rayburn or a modern electric oven and hob.
Actually, the owners are so accommodating that they'll happily provide hot homecooked food for your arrival; how wonderful is that, turing up at your large group holiday house to delicous home cooked fare? They can also come in anytime and create a feast for you, something that lots of our guests opt for, particularly if they're celebrating something special, like a big birthday or if they're away for a hen weekend.
It's all so in keeping; rough plastered walls and exposed stone, big bare timbers. The dining room is very agreeable, with a window seat and an inglenook fireplace housing a traditional style electric stove; added warmth at your finger tips when it's chilly. A big square dining table seats 12, soft lighting sets the scene for that special dinner.
To the right of the hallway is a commodious, light and airy sitting room with chunky beams, plenty of sofas, and antique rugs on the floor. We should explain that for safety reasons, the open fire place seen in the photograph below has now been replaced by an electric wood-burning effect stove - much easier to use, but just as cosy. Beyond the sitting room is an intimate little snug - the perfect place to curl up and read a good book or to sit woolgathering.
Halse Water House has 6 homely bedrooms; 5 of these are in the main house, sharing 2 bathrooms. Bedroom 1 has a king size bed, Bedrooms 2 and 5 have twin beds, and Bedrooms 3 and 4 are doubles. This is real country cottage living; blackbirds singing, owls hooting, the bark of a fox in the fields. Leave the window open and you'll wake up feeling refreshed; comfy beds and all that clean country air are all you need for a restful night's sleep.
Bedroom 6 is in a self-contained annex which has an en suite shower room, and an open plan kitchen/sitting room. This is perfect if you're planning a holiday to include grandparents or people who like to have their own space, or have earlier bedtimes than the rest of you; they can join in the fun but retreat to their own zone when they feel the need.
Halse Water House is rather dreamy; a blissful rural retreat deep in the Somerset countryside and it's great for all ages. There's plenty of space for the young 'uns to run around and let off steam, and ample opportunity for the grown ups to relax and unwind. You won't have to try very hard to imagine sitting on the bank by the brook watching dragonflies in mid air, or butterflies flitting about; take a tipple out there, take off your socks and shoes and dangle your feet in the cool water whilst the sun sets over the fields. Sometimes there are no words.
