Follow the winding country lanes and go on to a short private track that leads to the parking area in front of Frog Street. The house is an idyllic country retreat with wisteria growing up over the walls, and cottage garden flowers tumbling onto the patio that leads to the cool of the stone porch.
This is a such happy house, so calm and welcoming, and as it dates back to the 15th century it’s got oodles of character and original features – old elm beams and doors, exposed stone walls, big inglenook fireplaces, and in the sitting room, restored Jacobean panelling. From the porch you step into the dining room where there's a big chunky table with colourful chairs to seat you all, and window seats to both aspects; despite the low ceilings and small windows the house is wonderfully light and airy; spacious yet cosy.
To the left is the farmhouse style kitchen with an outlook over the garden and across the fields where you can often see deer feeding; the many cupboards and drawers have all the mod cons you need to rustle up a big breakfast or a celebratory feast. There’s a double Butler’s sink and in the corner a small table allows for cooking and mingling together; happy sociable times, just how holidays in the country ought to be.
To the right of the dining room you step down into the sitting room where there are inviting sofas to curl up on, a wide screen TV for movie nights and those matches you can’t bear to miss, and a user-friendly wood-burning stove (logs supplied). Next door is the games room with a 3 in 1 table so you can play pool, air hockey or table tennis, and beyond that a hallway leads to Bedroom 6 which has zip and link beds and an ensuite shower room. Note that there is the option of 2 extra beds at Frog Street, at an additional charge per person; Bedroom 6 can accommodate 1 extra bed. From the hallway a big thick door leads out to the front patio and a covered dining area – the perfect spot for morning coffee, alfresco lunch, or a drink in the evening beneath the twinkly lights.
The main staircase rises from the sitting room to a long landing; at one end is the Orchard Suite with Bedrooms 1 and 2 sleeping up to 6 people, so it’s perfect for a family or for 6 friends sharing. Bedroom 1 has a zip and link bed which can be a superking or twins, with the option of 1 or 2 two additional singles (at an extra charge per person). A dressing hall leads through to Bedroom 2, also with zip and link beds; the en suite bathroom for this suite has a double ended free standing bath and a separate shower. Just outside on the landing is a separate loo.
Along the landing is the Garden Room (Bedroom 3) with an opulent king size French bed, plenty of built-in cupboard space, and an en suite bathroom with an overhead shower. Bedroom 4, the Willow Room, is another good sized room, with zip and link beds and an en suite shower room.
A second staircase leads from the games room to the Snug Room, Bedroom 5, with zip and link beds, and a built-in wardrobe; the ensuite bathroom has a roll top bath, a roomy shower cubicle and a loo with one of those lovely old-fashioned high level cisterns. The bedrooms all have delightful views of the garden and of fields where horses graze; enjoy it with a cup of tea in bed – a blissful start to each day.
The gardens are at the front of the house and are south facing so if it’s hot you’ll need your suncream; although mostly fenced they blend almost seamlessly with the fields and trees beyond – such a wonderful setting. A wooden pergola heavy with climbing roses and a rambling passion flower leads to a paved patio where you’ll find ample garden furniture; beyond is a cosy Nordic style BBQ lodge with its own kitchenette attached, and a play area where there are also football goals.
In front of the patio is a lawned area and then the spa lodge where there’s a 5m swim spa and changing facilities; on the veranda you’ll find more seating and a hot tub perfectly positioned to take in the pastoral views over the fields. Beyond the lodge are trees, ripe with plums and damsons in early autumn. In a nutshell, Frog Street is a dream; peace and quiet, fresh air, and all you need for the perfect large group stay.
