It's elegant country living all round the minute you step through the front door of Berry House into the spacious high ceilinged hall. To the right is the dining room, one of the grandest rooms in the house, with rich heritage red walls, original period features, a cosy wood-burning stove and right in front of the window is a lovely polished dining table for up to 16 people to dine in style; that big sash window gives wonderful views of the Batherm Valley.
Berry House doesn't come with a butler, but next to the dining room is a terrific walk in pantry, giving access to the capacious kitchen; this is where traditional meets modern, with feature beams, a homely 4 oven Aga sited in an inglenook with the original bread oven, electric hob and oven, 2 dishwashers and a microwave. Plenty of room to prepare a meal, and to chat whilst you do so, but if cooking for a lot of people seems a bit of a chore, just call up one of our highly respected professional caterers; they'll come in and create a feast fit for royalty - and they make it appear so effortless, it's amazing how they do it! Right next to the kitchen is a handy boot room with a washing machine and tumble dryer, and a further useful fridge.
To the left of the hall is a cosy snug room with original dado rails and a beautiful marble surround fireplace; stylish chairs and sofas to snuggle up on, a music docking station and a big flatscreen TV with full Sky package, including sports and movies. The perfect place to get cosy and watch a romantic movie or lose yourself in a good book.
Next to the snug is a spacious billiard room where you can unwind with a game of table football or pool. Pick a prize or a forfeit and set the challenge of an in-house pool championship.
The billiard room leads through to the light and airy drawing room; sumptuous sofas; a beautiful decorative ceiling, sparkling chandelier, and an admirable marble fireplace. A sophisticated space for afternoon tea.
The charm continues upstairs, typical of a rambling country house, with the master bedroom occupying the west end; it's got wonderful curved bay window, and a lovely en suite bathroom.
The other bedrooms are equally attractive and exude that same sense of restfulness; all but two have en suite bathrooms. The property actually has five bathrooms in total, three with baths, and all with roomy walk-in showers. All rooms are furnished in keeping with the classic style of the house, and each enjoys a deligthful rural aspect.
A further two ample sized bedrooms are located in a separate building beyond the swimming pool; both have French doors leading out onto a decking area that overlooks a pond (fenced) and the beautiful Devon valley. Being separate from the main house has its advantages for those people in your party who like to have their own space away from the crowd sometimes. The heated swimming pool has plenty of room around it for loungers, and at an even 4ft depth it's perfect for the whole family to enjoy; floor to ceiling windows allow natural daylight to flood in and give a wonderful outlook of the verdant countryside.
The setting is glorious, with incredible views in 200 acres of organic pasture land, dotted with ancient copses, and the owners are doing their bit for the planet and adding to these; in recent years they have planted 12,000 trees on 20 acres. The same family have been at Berry House for over 50 years, and knowing the house inside out, they're very keen to retain the charm and ambience that it's always had. As they still live nearby they are at hand should you need them during your stay.
The garden is laid out in English country house style, with topiary box and yew hedges. An old wisteria and magnolia scramble up the front of the house and are a sight that takes your breath away when in flower. You can imagine sitting outside on a warm day, with all that gorgeous countryside stretched out before you and the delicate fragrance of wisteria delighting your senses...
Nature lovers will love the wildife; there are plenty of opportunities for birdwatching, and red deer come to graze within view from nearby Exmoor National Park; it's heavenly, and we wouldn't be surprised if you want to stay forever.
Lovely as the house is you really must get outdoors and make the most of the grounds; there's a play area for the children, and a field just in front of Berry House is kept mown for rounders, cricket or football - an opportunity for some great family laughter and to make memories to treasure. Take a picnic out there, make it special. Or have a barbecue on the terrace, make your own pizzas and cook them in the pizza oven; smoke some fish or meat for your alfresco feast.
Of course, we all know how unpredictable the English weather can be, but that doesn't really matter at Berry House, because it's gorgeous anytime of year. In the autumn you can spend the days walking in the woods, kicking up leaves, and head back to warm your toes by the fireside. If it's raining, don't let it dampen your spirits, get together in the drawing room and play games, bake cakes on the Aga, shoot some pool in the billiards room.
If you have a reason to celebrate, you''ll find that Berry House really sets the scene. The house has played host to many a joyful celebration, with guests coming here with their nearest and dearest for those milestone birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and of course, hen weekends. A big spread in the dining room, drinks on the terrace; perfect. It's all so perfect.
