The Swan, Bampton, Devon

Warm salutations await you at this traditional rural inn where local produce ranks highly; all meat comes from the farms in the surrounding area and fish is caught in Devon. There are some enticing small plates – local trout pate and toast, grilled Brixham mackerel on garlic toast – and for mains you can tuck into a hearty steak and kidney and Bevy ale suet pudding, or spiced rump of Exmoor lamb. On the edge of Exmoor National Park, Bampton is a small town with a villagey feel, on the River Batherm, a tributary of the Exe; have a short stroll around whilst you’re here and admire the sturdy cottages and fine Georgian houses; there are over 100 listed buildings, including the charming church of St. Michael and All Angels, and two telephone boxes.
