The Giant Club, Axminster, Devon
Don’t think of the Giant Club in Axminster as just a place to go to eat, because it’s so much more than that. Think of it as a dining experience; the entire vibe is artistic and quirky and you feel very privileged to be a part of it. From outside you’d never know how good it is, you might even wonder what goes on behind the curtains (you can’t see in), and because it’s small (only 30 covers) when you go there it’s as if you’ve been allowed in to some secret club, with everyone arriving at the same time for cocktails and then all being served together.
The Giant Club is the brainchild of ex River Cottage chef Gideon Hitchin who comes up with what’s being served and prepares and cooks it all himself, so the food is largely influenced by what’s in season or available locally, and what’s inspiring him. It’s a set menu of six courses, although it can be tweaked to cater for vegetarians, vegans and any dietary needs. The presentation, the flavours and the tastes are amazing; savour it before washing it down with a very good organic wine.
Open Friday and Saturday night only. Bookings absolutely essential
