River Cottage HQ, nr Axminster, Devon
One thing you're guaranteed at River Cottage HQ in Devon is jolly good food of course; the other is a rather lovely experience in an idyllic setting so it's well worth going there when you're dwon this way on your holidays in the UK, but you must pre-book because it’s not like a restaurant that you can just walk into; like we say, it's more of an experience and one that any fans of HFW won't want to miss.
Most popular are the Friday & Saturday Night Feasts; you’re collected by tractor at the top of the hill and taken down the track to the 64 acre farm that's snuggled in a spectacular valley just a miles or so from Axminster. First you have a little drink by the wood burner in the yurt, or you can wander round the kitchen garden, a lot of it will depend on what the weather's doing; then you take your seat in the restored 16th century threshing barn for an introductory talk from the chef, followed by a four course supper.
You can book a more cosy dinner in the 17th century Farmhouse for 18 people, which begins with welcome drinks and canapes before you tuck into a 3-5 course dinner. River Cottage holds several events throughout the year include Summer Lunch, Sunday Lunch, Garden Lunches and Summer Nights, as well as various foraging and cookery classes; one that's very popular is the annual River Cottage Food Fair (usually held late May) and The River Cottage Festival in August. Just remember to book.
