River Cottage Canteen, Axminster, Devon
You’ll see people taking selfies outside of this well known Kitchen & Deli; until it opened here Axminster wasn’t talked about much, other than for its famous carpets, so River Cottage coming here has helped to put the town on the map.
There’s quite a lively, trendy atmosphere at the canteen, despite a mix of ages. It’s usually busy because they do something for everyone; roast on Sundays, there’s a kids menu, and they’re open for breakfast, and the thing is you know it’s going to be good because it’s got celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall behind it, hasn’t it?
Carnivores can tuck into Chargrilled saddleback belly & chop, celeriac, rhubarb & hazelnut slaw & rhubarb bbq sauce, and Chargrilled hangar steak, roast flat mushroom, onion & thyme butter, & salsa verde. Vegetarians can have their fill of Squash & walnut patties, carrot & preserved lemon salad with nutty quinoa, or Bubble & squeak, chargrilled purple sprouting broccoli, poached egg and mustard sauce. Share a meat board or a veg board, or just have something to nibble.
