HIX Oyster & Fish House, Lyme Regis, Dorset

Mark Hix is well known for his original gastronomic flair and each of his restaurants have gained a first class reputation in their own right. But this is his home ground, his stomping patch, so to dine at Hix Oyster & Fish House in Lyme Regis feels like such a privilege.
The setting couldn’t be better - on the hillside with astonishing sea views that you can’t possibly miss because there are floor to ceiling windows, and if you sit out on the terrace, well, all the better.  The dining room is all light and airy and uncluttered; it’s nice but the focus is on the food, mostly fish and seafood of course although there are vegetarian options and there’s a steak dish on the mains. Anyhow, everything is locally sourced and as you’d expect, top quality. From the A La Carte menu are temptations such as Scrumpy fried Torbay haddock with chips and mushy peas, Fillet of Newlyn hake with Burry Bay cockles and samphire, and Grilled Lyme Bay Lobster with garlic butter and chips.
They also do summer feasts for groups of 10 or more, and worth bearing in mind if you’re celebrating something big is that they also cater for private parties with bespoke menus.
