Celebrating our local produce with Forest Beef

At Sleeps12 we love to work closely with other local businesses as we believe strongly in being a part of a close knit community. Our suppliers are local, our activities are local and we care about the local community.

One morning we set off to visit the home of Becky and Russ Batchelor of Forest Beef. Nestled on top of the Blackdown Hills Forest Beef is a short drive from properties such as Jurston Barn, Fuzzy Orchard, Ham Bottom, The Cottage Beyond, Culmbridge House and Flossy Brook.

A warm welcome was received, wellies were pulled on, and we went for a walk around the farm to see the animals and have a chat about their exciting news. Becky and Ross have just won the prestigious NSF Assured Beef Farm of the Year!

We loved seeing at first hand the lengths they go to to produce award winning produce. Visit their popular farm shop and you may be lucky enough to have a sneaky peak at the cattle, pigs and chickens yourself. Beautifully looked after this family take a real pride in what they produce and the accolade they have received.

Variations in farming over the last few decades means that the family, who have been at the farm since the 1950’s, have diversified over the years. Having had a mixed farm, a dairy herd and now beef cattle they know farming inside and out. Amazingly there are also 20000 chickens on their two farms which means 19 thousand eggs each day! Eggs supply Aldi and Morrisons and are free range to ensure that the consumer is getting amazing taste while staying true to their beliefs in animal husbandry. So you may have sampled one of their eggs already!

Taking a look at the cattle we chatted about the Longhorn breed, wintered inside to ensure safety these cattle roam the forest and fields in the summer. Initially a herd part of the Woodland Grazing Project which was set up by the Forestry Commission it has been nurtured to provide the most fantastic beef products. You can find Becky and Russ at local farmers markets year round as well as selling their produce in their farm shop. You can even give Becky a call and she can arrange a courier to deliver it to you. Mail order award winning beef. What more could you want?!

We wish them the best of luck on December the 10th they will be attending the Awards Ceremony and will find out if they have won the overall accolade of Farmer of the Year.
