We were over at Culmbridge House last week, following its recent redecoration. Redecoration? It’s more like a transformation! This large group holiday home has seen a whole new look, but what’s amazing is that the fresh modern style blends seamlessly with the essential character of this lovely Victorian house. There’s always been something special about this property but now it really is gorgeous, the revamp has brought out the best in it yet it still feels nice and homely. It’s absolutely spot on for those big family holidays where grandparents and aunties and uncles come along too, you know, if you’re celebrating a special occasion, an 80th birthday or something. Culmbridge House is perfect for that, and for those holidays where two or three families get together, because the house sleeps up to 14 people, plus room for 2 cots and 2 toddler beds.
You see, it’s got the balance just right, for all ages; an indoor pool, a games area, play equipment, a BBQ lodge, and the garden is a dream, but we’ll tell you about that in a minute. This big holiday house is tucked away in the Blackdown Hills, on the edge of Hemyock, a peaceful village with a shop, and a pub, a playing field, tennis courts, and no shortage of walks through beautiful countryside.
There’s a lot you can see and do within easy reach, plenty of scope for days out; the coast can be reached within an hour, and there are beautiful historic houses to visit, little market towns and villages to pootle around, activities to partake in. You could go off to Exmoor for the day, or take the kids to Crealy Park and the boys to Diggerland; have a city day in Exeter and see the cathedral and the underground passages, go mackerel fishing at Lyme Regis then come back and cook your catch on the barbecue.
What you’ll notice straightaway about Culmbridge House is how fresh and light and airy it feels, and the welcoming ambience. If you do come here celebrating a milestone you’ll certainly take home some very happy memories; the chunky dining table is big enough for you all to get together for a huge feast, and really, as it’s such a special occasion, you should push the boat out and book one of our recommended professional caterers to come and cook for you; they create the most amazing meals and somehow they make it look effortless.
At the moment of course, the weather is gorgeous so we saw Culmbridge House bathed in the beauty of an English summer, but we know it’s wonderful any time of year. What’s a joy in the autumn is to get back after a long country walk, leave your muddy boots and wet coat in the utility room, and go and get cosy in the sitting room with the wood-burner going. And Christmas here is magical, a proper country Christmas.
We couldn’t believe how different the bedrooms look after the recent facelift; wow, what a difference; if you’ve been here before and you liked it then, you should definitely come again. It just seems so much lighter and brighter, and more spacious. Crisp white walls and the use of subtle neutral tones is complimented by well chosen accessories, different colours in each room; look at the gallery pictures, you’ll see what we mean. It’s great, all great.
And as you’d expect with any large group holiday cottage, there’s a big garden, and seriously, it’s really, really lovely. Lots of mature trees and shrubs, flowers and herbs, and it has so much appeal for all ages because there are lots of little grassy pathways that wind round and about, so it’s fun to wander round and explore because there are a few surprises among the bushes; you’ll find quiet spots to sit and read a book in sun or shade, and in a leafy nook there’s a BBQ lodge where you can all snuggle up beneath the fairy lights and chat long into the night. The children will have hours of fun on the play equipment, playing garden games, doing handstands and cartwheels on the lawn.
Just up the lane, a very short walk away, is the pool hall, all yours from 9 in the morning till 10 at night. What fun, to all go there together and splash about in the heated pool, play table football, have a game of pool; there are even changing rooms and showers there so you don’t have to walk there in your swimming cossies, and from September this year there’ll be the luxury of a sauna.
See why it’s the perfect house for big family holidays? But actually, it’s equally good for hen weekends, and for corporate breaks; some come here for team building days, others book it for corporate hospitality. It’s a good all-rounder that’s suitable for all sorts of large groups; that’s why we’re proud to have Culmbridge House on our portfolio of holiday homes and cottages in the UK.
