Family Holiday in Somerset
Yer tiz! Famed for cider, cheddar cheese and cream teas, the beautiful county of Somerset is a great choice for your UK family holiday. There’s heaps to see and do for all ages – how about an exciting day out in the city? Admire the wonderful Georgian architecture at the Royal Crescent in Bath; visit the Roman Baths and Museum, the American Museum, or the Fashion Museum. Catch some street theatre in the city centre, stroll through Royal Victoria Park, or try the famous buns at Sally Lunn’s Historic Eating House & Museum. Take in the hallowed ambience of Wells, with its ancient cathedral, Bishops Palace and Vicar’s Close. Browse around the county town of Taunton, or pootle about some of the many smaller market towns – Frome, Ilminster, Wellington or Langport.
Somerset has a very diverse coastline, with several dog friendly beaches, but if you’re after some bucket and spade fun, there’s Minehead, Weston-Super-Mare and Burnham-on-Sea. Try Kilve beach for fossil hunting, or the quaint little hamlet of Porlock Weir. The little harbour town of Watchet, can be reached by steam train on the West Somerset Railway, or head to Dunster beach and whilst you’re there, visit the castle and have a bite to eat at Cobblestones Restaurant & Café.
Explore the great outdoors and head for the hills! There’s the rugged wilds of the Quantocks, the rolling landscape of the Blackdowns, or the varied terrain of the Mendips, where you can visit Cheddar Gorge or Wookey Hole. Spend the day on Exmoor, with its wild heaths, wooded valleys and winding country lanes; go out to the Somerset Levels for walking and wildlife spotting and visit mystical Glastonbury and climb to the top of the Tor, before heading back to the Who’d Have Thought It Inn for a rewarding lunch.
Take a trip through the pretty local stone built villages in South Somerset – stop off at Perry’s Cider Mills at Dowlish Wake, or visit the historic houses of Barrington Court at Barrington, or Montacute House at Montacute.
Wow! So much to pack in on your family holiday in Somerset – and some fantastic memories to take home!
